Texas Mid-Am: Wofford races to 1st round lead
DALLAS, Texas (Sept. 21, 2012) -- Players experienced nearly perfect scoring conditions for the first round of the Texas Mid-Amateur Championship presented by Breitling. Mild temperatures, sunny skies, and little wind left the Blue Course at Dallas Athletic Club defenseless against the best amateurs in the state aged 25 or older. Nineteen players put themselves in good position for the weekend with under par rounds.

Joel Wofford of Paris, Texas raced out to a first round lead after opening round of 6 under par 66. Wofford birdied the 10th hole, his opening hole of the day, and never looked back. He made 2 more birdies on the back nine to turn at 3 under par. Wofford then birdied holes 1-3 to jump to 6 under par. Two bogeys and two birdies later, Wofford found himself at the top of the leader board heading into the weekend.

Michael Wilhelm and Andrew Lawson, both of Dallas, fired opening rounds of 67 to move into a tie for second place. Michael Wilhelm made 7 birdies on the day and only slipped up with a double bogey on his second nine. Andrew Lawson made an eagle and 5 birdies during his round to make up for his 2 bogeys. Dallas Athletic Club member Mike Schrade along with Lewis Stephenson and Scott Volpitto sit in a tie for fourth place after rounds of 4 under par 68.
