Dallas Athletic Club to host Texas Mid-Am
MESQUITE, Texas (Sept. 19, 2012) -- The state’s most accomplished amateur players age 25 and older will meet on the Blue Course at Dallas Athletic Club in Dallas this week for the 2012 Texas Mid-Amateur Championship presented by Breitling.

While this will be the first Texas Mid-Amateur conducted at DAC, it will be the fifth major TGA championship overall held at the club. Previously, DAC was the site of the 1992 and 2003 Texas Amateur, 2007 State Senior Amateur, and 2010 State Mid-Amateur Match Play.

The Texas Mid-Amateur presented by Breitling is open to male amateur golfers who belong to a facility that is a member of the Texas Golf Association, will have reached the age of 25 on or before September 21, 2012, have a GHIN Handicap Index not exceeding 8.4, and are current Texas residents.

The format for the championship is 54 holes individual stoke play. All contestants will play 18 holes on both Friday, September 21, and Saturday, September 22. After 36 holes the 132 player starting field will be cut to the low 54 and ties heading into Sunday’s final round.

Of the 553 entries received this year, 26 players were fully exempt from qualifying based on past performance. To determine the remaining 106 spots, 18 hole qualifyings were held at 13 sites across the state from July 30 – September 10.

In addition to defending champion Beau Davis of San Angelo, who won last year’s title on the Nicklaus Course at The Club at Carlton Woods in The Woodlands, two other former champions are in the starting field. They are Rob Couture of Dallas (2008) and Mike Booker of The Woodlands (2003).

Among the other top players looking to be in the mix on Sunday afternoon are: John Bearrie of Arlington, the 2010 State Mid-Amateur Match Play champion; Mike Calef of Allen, winner of the 2012 West Texas Amateur and North Texas Mid-Amateur; 2012 South Mid-Amateur champion David Pocknall of Katy; and current State Senior Amateur champion Chuck Palmer of Dallas.

Starting times for the first two rounds have been released and are posted on the Texas Golf Association web site (txga.org). Live scoring updates, player interviews and daily recaps will be available once the action gets underway.
