Iowa Sr. Amateur: Watson wins it
MASON CITY, Iowa (Aug. 22, 2012) -- Bill Watson of Mason City posted a final round 72 to win the 34th Iowa Senior Amateur Championship in his hometown at Mason City Country Club. He came into the final round a shot behind Scott Briggs of Burlington and tied with fellow Mason City resident Joel Yunek. Briggs faltered to a final round 76 while Yunek posted a 73.
Making the strongest charge was Gene Elliott, who was the fourth member of the final group. Elliott posted a final round 67 and, along with Yunek, came within a stroke of taking Watson to a playoff.In the Super Senior Division (65+) Dick Larson of Cedar Rapids cruised to a six shot victory. Larson posted a final round 74 to pair with his 71 and 69 in the first two rounds. Gary Engle of Ottumwa finished in second.A PAIR OF ACES! : Dan Naughton of Marion and Charles Svensson of Urbandale each made a hole-in-one during the second round. Svensson struck first by holing out on the 14th hole while Naughton’s came no more than 30 minutes later on the 5th hole.
This is the sixth time Mason City Country Club has hosted the Iowa Senior Amateur, the last being in 2006. Sam Aossey, who is in the field this week, chipped in for a birdie on the final hole and a one-shot win.
