Maryland Mid-Amateur: Jew and Walker lead
LAYTONSVILLE, MD, (Aug. 13, 2012) -- Walter Jew, playing in the final threesome, fired a 3-under-par 36-32--68 to climb into a share of the opening-day lead in the 26th annual Mid-Am Championship of the Maryland State Golf Association at Blue Mash Golf Course in Laytonsville, August 13. Earlier, Dan Walker of the University of Maryland Golf Club had taken the early lead with 33-35--68.

On a good day for scoring -- warm and sunny -- five others dipped under the par of 36-35--71 for the 6,771-yard Montgomery County course. Ray Sheedy, 26, from Clustered Spires Golf Club in Frederick, and Tucker Sampson, from Caves Valley, 69, and Lee Flemister, Blue Mash GC; Brett Williams, Baltimore CC, and Anthony DeSimone, Waverly Woods GC, at 70.

With the 89-player field reduced to the low 40 and ties for the second round (August 14), 48 players at 76 and better will advance. The cut was within one player of 75 (39 players), allowing the nine 76's to continue.

Walker, making his first appearance in the event, had three front-nine birdies and highlighted his back nine by getting up-and-down for birdie at the 500-yard 12th and birdieing the 18th to go past Sheedy into first place. Jew, from Norbeck CC, tied him by playing the final 10 holes in 4 under par.

In setting the early pace, Sheedy had three birdies -- the last two at Nos. 10-11 -- and a bogey. Sampson also used early back-nine birdies to help his cause. A Chevy Chase resident, he is making his first start in the event since moving from Charlotte, N.C., a little less than two years ago. He had one birdie on the front for 35, and after doubling the 10th, ran in three successive birdies to finish with 34. Notes: There were three eagle-3's on the 12th hole, as Don Phattiyakul and Anthony Chapman had "inches" tap-ins after narrowly missing double-eagles, while Adam Dodson rolled in a 25-foot putt. . .Ted Coon, a former runner-up, had the most dramatic improvement, as he went from an out-going 43 to a 31 that included four birdies.
