Texas North Amateur: Gilbert holds on for a win
Euless, TX – Eighty-four players started the week looking to capture the last of the North Regional Championships for 2012, and possibly the most coveted North Amateur. Great course conditions and absolutely wonderful weather greeted the players all week as they looked to tame one of Texas’ finest public facilities, Texas Star. The final round lived up to the excitement as the leader continued his stellar play and others rocketed up the leaderboard with low final rounds. In the end, no one could catch Chris Gilbert’s lead as he captured the 2012 North Amateur Title. Gilbert, a member of the University of Kansas golf team, held a four stroke lead over Charlie Ewing heading into today’s final round. He set the pace early as he began his final round with five straight pars followed by back to back birdies which extended his lead. A bogey on hole #8 and another on #10 brought the field back into the mix but Gilbert’s lead was just too much. Finishing his round with eight straight pars, Gilbert fired a final round 71 which gave him a three day total of nine under par, 204. Charlie Ewing, first round co-leader and two shots back heading into today looked to make a run on Gilbert but struggled coming in. After posting a one under, 35, on the front Ewing found trouble as he carded a three bogeys and one double bogey in a five hole stretch on the back. Ending his tournament on a high note, Ewing birdied his final hole which put him finishing in seventh place at a three day total of 210. Kyle Pilgrim of Colleyville began the day seven shots back of Gilbert but quickly closed the gap. Six birdies and one lone bogey in his final round 66 propelled him into a second place finish, two shots back of Gibson. Nathan Anderson and Hunter Brown finished in a tie for third as both finished with three day totals of six under par, 207.
