Texas North: Gilbert leads after round one
Euless, Tex. (Aug. 10, 2012) -- Euless, TX – Round one of the North Texas Amateur Championship saw continually warm temperatures and little to no wind which gave the players perfect playing conditions here at Texas Star Golf Course. The Keith Foster par 71 course brought a challenging blend of shot placement requirements and short game mastery to which several players conquered early. In all, eighty-four players looked to post a low numbers as they head into this weekend’s final two rounds.

Chris Gilbert of McKinney posted the first low number of the day with an opening round of five under par, 66. Gilbert, who plays on the University of Kansas golf team, had just two lone bogeys on his card which were no match for his seven birdies which quickly vaulted him to the top of the leaderboard. Joining Gilbert at the top is Charlie Ewing of Dallas. The Vanderbilt University junior began his day with a birdie on one which was soon erased by two back to back bogeys on holes #5 and #6. Carding a birdie four on the par five , Ewing found himself making the turn at even par. Catching fire quickly, Ewing ran off three straight birdies to begin his back nine and then added two more on his closing two holes to shoot a five under, thirty-one, on the closing nine.

Sitting just one shot behind the leaders is Mike Calef of Allen. Calef, who has had a stellar summer of golf already, continued his great play by carding an opening round 67 which included an eagle, three birdies, and one bogey. Colby Harwell of Lorena finds himself just two shots back and in fourth place heading into Saturday’s second round after posting an opening round of three under par, 68. In all, twelve players find themselves heading into the weekend under par for the championship all within four shots of our co-leaders.

Entries are open to male amateur golfers residing north of the 31st parallel (Salado, Texas is the cutoff point) who have a certified GHIN Handicap Index of 8.4 or less.
