Sealy, TX (August 10, 2012) -- A humid morning gave way to sunny skies and the occasional breeze during the first round of the 2012 South Amateur Championship, hosted by Sealy’s River Ridge Golf Club. With the South Amateur Championship the last opportunity to earn regional Player of the Year points, Owen Joyner will head into the second round with a one stroke lead after the first day.
Joyner, of The Woodlands, was able to navigate the River Ridge’s River-Parkland layout to the tune of 4-under par 67. Joyner recorded two birdies on the front nine, River Course, to turn at 2-under par 33. His back nine, the Parkland Course, saw Joyner make three birdies and one bogey for another 2-under par nine.
Sitting one stroke off of Joyner’s first round lead are five players at 3-under par 68. Jeff New, also of The Woodlands, was able to make three birdies during his opening round. Houston’s Nick Cristea made five birdies, coupled with two bogeys. David Pocknall, of Katy, made three birdies, one eagle and two bogeys. Rounding out the group at 3-under par 68 is Richmond’s Brandon Wilhide, who ran in five birdies and one double bogey. Two strokes back at 2-under par 69 is Sugar Land’s Trent Booher. Booher made four birdies and two bogeys in his opening round. A group of six players will head into round two at 1-under par, including Mike Booker, defending champion. Booker made three birdies and two bogeys.
