MUNCIE, Ind. (Aug. 9, 2012) -- One-under par 69 proved to be the score to beat at the IGA Mid-Amateur Championship at Delaware Country Club. Ron Carter, Terry Werner, and Dave Williamson sit at the top of the leader board, as the only three players to break par today.
“I judged the speed of the greens well,” said Monticello’s Carter. “I missed the first green today on the left side, but hit a flop shot close to get up and down for par,” he added.
Carter’s round consisted of five birdies coming on holes 3, 4, 7, 9, and 16, as well as four bogeys.
“It’d be great at my age to win,” said the 61 year old. “This course plays very long and I am happy to still be hitting the ball a decent way,” Carter added.
Werner’s round consisted of three birdies coming on holes 4, 9, and 17, and he only added two bogeys to his scorecard.
“I’ve been close before,” said Werner, from Dyer. “It’d mean a lot to win. I’m going to make as many good swings as I can tomorrow and see what happens,” he added.
Like Carter, Williamson also had five birdies today, coming on holes 3, 4, 6, 9, and 11. He similarly added four bogeys to his card.
“To me, it’s a big deal to win any IGA event,” said Crawfordsville’s Williamson. “I played with Carich and Schroeder last week and studied their putting, which helped me a lot today. I hope to keep the ball in play tomorrow and putt like I did today,” he added.
Carter, Werner, and Williamson will tee off in the final group tomorrow.
Carl Hobbs, Rafael Codaro, and Aaron Walters are only one shot behind after firing even par 70s today.
