O’Connell and Edelman are playing together for the first time. O’Donnell reached the Four-Ball finals in 2005 with Erv Allaghi of North Jersey when they lost to Robert Whartenby and Michael Minter of the host Trenton Country Club.

O’Connell, 36 of Mahwah, is a financial advisor who won the North Jersey Club Championship in 2008 and ’10.

Edelman, 18, is a recent graduate of Saddle River Day School and will attend Bucknell University. He won the club championship in 2011 and won two International Junior Golf Tournaments last year.

O’Connell and Edelman birdied holes 1, 2, 3 and 4, then added birdies on holes Nos. 7, 14, 15 and 16. Bogeys came at holes Nos. 9 and 10.

“Essex County is one of my favorite courses on the planet,” O’Connell said. “They took down a lot of trees and it opened up the ciurse. It is magnificent. The greens are as good as they can be.”

Edelman likes playing with O’Connell and said:“He may be older, but I like to think we play on the same level. This course sets us well for me."
