California Women's Amateur: Cowan ends Harigae's Streak

CARMEL, CALIFORNIA (November 5, 2005) -- Lynne Cowan of Davis claimed the California Women's Amateur title at Quail Lodge on Saturday, with a 5-and-4 victory over Marianne Towersey of Pebble Beach.

Cowan never trailed in the 36-hole match at The Golf Club at Quail Lodge in Carmel. Cowan is a two-time past champion of the event, while Towersey is the current California Women's Senior champion.

Key to Cowan's success was her semi-final victory (2-up) over 16-year-old Mina Harigae, who was trying for her unprecedented 5th straight victory.

Harigae became the youngest winner in tournament history in 2001, at age 12. And she hadn't lost since. Cowan and Harigae's names are firmly planted on a list of notable past champions, from Patty Sheehan and Juli Inkster to Dorothy Delasin and Natalie Gulbis.
