Palm Beach (Florida) G.A. Ends Season at PGA National
PALM BEACH GARDENS, Fla. (November 19, 2005) -- David Abell of Jupiter and Mark Rubin of Boca Raton were honored Saturday as the Player of the Year and Senior Player of the Year, respectively, as the Palm Beach County Golf Association completed its 30th season with an awards luncheon at PGA National.
Abell, 45, business manager for touring pro Nick Price, won the County Amateur and Mid-Amateur championships, was runnerup on two other events and also had a third place finish.
Rubin, 54, a mortgage broker, won the Senior Amateur and was the runnerup in the Senior Four-Ball.
Also honored was George Andre of Palm Beach Gardens, who received the Bobby Bryant Award as the Volunteer of the Year. Andre devoted more than 50 tournament days to the PBCGA this year as a rules official.
The PBCGA also awarded some $15,500 in scholarships to 11 high school and college students. The recipients were William Anderson, Greg Gonzales, Griffin Karr, Madonna March, Joanne Michel, Marie Saintclair, Slande Saintclair, Casey Schrader, Michelle Steakin, Andrew Stirling and Christie Wiederhold.
The Diamond Myst Finale Four-Ball preceded the luncheon. Forty teams competed in three separate formats on the 6,400-yard Squire course. Holes 1-6 was a scramble, holes 7-12, modified alternate shots, and holes 13-18, better ball of partners. The winners were Artie Scott and R.J. Nakashian, gross, 62; and Dave Dulman and Tom McConchie, net, 61.
