NAPA, Calif. (July 16, 2012) -- Today marked the opening round of the 17th annual California Women's Championship played this year at Chardonnay Golf Club in Northern California. Scoring conditions were far from ideal as the fog rolled in dropping the temperatures into the 50's and low 60's and bringing with it blustery winds with gusts over 20 mph.

The players had a difficult time navigating the tight fairways surrounded by vineyards and hazards and the scores reflected it.

Only three players in the 50 player field managed to break 80 in the challenging conditions. Emily Talley, a recent graduate of the University of Colorado at Boulder, had the low score of the day with a 3-over-par 75. Talley, whose home course is nearby Napa Valley Country Club, carded three birdies and six bogeys on her round. After a successful college golf career, Talley has professional aspirations and will attempt "Q" school in the fall.

Kayla Lynn Riede of Olivehurst and a senior at University of Tulsa posted a 4-over-par 76 in a round that including three birdies. Hannah Suh, who will start her college career this fall at Cal Berkeley, shot a 76 with two birdies and seven bogeys and is in third.

Defending champion Stephanie Arcala is not in the field. After graduating college last year she has joined the workforce as an accountant. Last year's second place finisher, Marissa Mar, a Stanford sophomore, is also absent from the field attending summer school.

The second round of the 54-hole tournament continues tomorrow with tee times starting at 7:30 a.m.
