Utah Senior: Craig Woodward repeats
MIDWAY, Utah (July 1, 2012) -- Paul Cannon went into the final round of the 54-hole UGA Senior Amateur with a two stroke lead on the field, and still had a one shot lead going onto the final three holes, but defending champion Craig Woodward birdied 16 and 17 to take a one shot lead over Cannon and a two shot edge over Rick Lloyd and Bill Probst going onto the tense final hole.

Cannon needed a birdie to win, or have Woodward bogey, and Probst and Lloyd each needed to birdie and hope Woodward would bogey. Woodward opened up the possibilities when he bogeyed the final hole, but so did Cannon, and Lloyd and Probst barely missed the birdie they needed to catch Woodward.

Midway is Probst’s home town, and in fact, a few years back he was the mayor of the town, but so far he has been thwarted in his efforts to win a UGA title in Midway. Probst was the winner of the UGA Senior Match Play earlier in the month at Valley View and is still the leader of the UGA Senior Player Performance Ranking.

Richard Cropper won the Super Senior Division (age 64 and over) by five shots over Al Simkins who earlier won the UGA Super Senior Match Play. Cropper shot 70-74-144.

The Crater Springs Golf Course has recently changed ownership and there is some major renovation going on at the course, but the course is in good condition, especially the greens, and the construction was managed well during the tournament.

It was the first time the UGA Senior Amateur has been 54-holes and also the first time it has been played on a Sunday. There were several strong players who didn’t enter the tournament because of Sunday play.

The tournament was 36-holes for the Super Seniors and the Net Division.
