Harvey leads by 3 at N. Carolina Amateur
DURHAM, NC (June 16, 2012) --- Third round results of the 52nd North Carolina Amateur Championship of the Carolinas Golf Association hosted by Treyburn Country Club in Durham, NC on Saturday, June 17, 2012 (7047 yards, par 36-36—72, 74.8/143).

Scott Harvey of Greensboro took a three stroke lead over Jordan Utley of Greensboro heading into the final round after posting a third round four-under 68 for a six-under 210 total. Harvey, the number one ranked amateur in North Carolina and South Carolina, is seeking his first North Carolina Amateur title. Harvey is the current champion of the Carolinas Amateur and Carolinas Mid-Amateur. Harvey’s father, Bill, won the 1966 North Carolina Amateur title. “Today I played really good which was pretty much the opposite of yesterday,” Harvey stated.

“I controlled the ball, hit a bunch of greens. Fairly stress free. I made one three-putt bogey on 17 and came back with a birdie on 18. So I’m in position for tomorrow.” Utley posted a two-under 70 that included seven birdies and five bogeys to inch closer to the lead that he co-shared after round one. “Very, very up and down day,” Utley noted.

“I played really well on the front nine. Real solid. And then I made the turn and didn’t make my first par on the back nine until 18.”

36-hole leader Adam Stephenson of Greenville carded a triple bogey seven on the 18th hole to fall into a tie for third place at 214 with Michael McGowan of Southern Pines and Matthew Crenshaw of Burlington. Defending champion, Harold Varner III of Gastonia posted a three under 69 to creep up the leaderboard and now stands in a tie for sixth place five shots off the lead at 215.

Round four starting times are listed at bottom with the first groups starting at 8:00am off #1 and #10 tees. The top 30 players will earn an exemption into the 53rd North Carolina Amateur Championship that will be played June 13-16, 2013 at Forsyth Country Club in Winston-Salem, NC.
