Mathias Wins Texas South Regional Amateur in Playoff
HOUSTON, TX (March 20, 2005)--Jonathon Mathias of San Antonio hit his approach shot to within one foot of the cup on the second hole of a sudden death playoff to win the 2005 TGA South Region Amateur Championship at Pine Forest Country Club in Houston.
Mathias was joined in the playoff by first round leader Jerry Hudgins, second round leader Andrew Cooper, and Kip Guidry. Hudgins and Cooper bogeyed the first playoff hole and were eliminated. Playing first from the second fairway, Mathias’ second shot almost went into the hole on the fly, stopping just a foot away. Guidry’s approach came up just short of the green, and his chip slid a couple of feet past the hole. Guidry tapped in for par, but it was academic as Mathias made the tap-in birdie for the victory.
Overnight storms dumped almost an inch of rain on the golf course, which made it play a little longer that the 6,800 yards on the scorecard. The weather conditions were again perfect, but no one was able to take advantage of the softer greens an make a strong move. All of the leaders posted over par scores in the final round, with Mathias and Hudgins shooting 74, Guidry 73, and overnight leader Cooper 76, as all finished 54 holes at three over par 219.
