Texas (TGA) North Regional Amateur
FRANKSTON, TX (March 20, 2005)--The Texas Golf Association’s North Regional Amateur Championship came down to the final nine holes of play between Bart Goodwin of Flower Mound and Steve Galko of Dallas. Galko, who led Goodwin by four shots heading into the final round, found himself locked in a tie for the lead after Goodwin fired a blistering three-under par 33 on the front nine. Earl Jacks of Garland started the day trailing by one, but found himself two back after the front nine. Jacks played steady down the stretch but failed to make a run coming home.
Goodwin stumbled on hole #14 but played gritty golf down the stretch to earn himself sole possession of second place. Galko slammed the door shut with a 25-foot birdie putt from off the green on the demanding par 4 17th hole. With his victory, Galko earned himself an exemption into the 2005 State Amateur Championship taking place in June at Barton Creek Resort and Clubs in Austin. In addition to the exemption Galko and the top 30 finishers earned valuable North Texas Player of the Year points. Galko, the winner of the 2003 North Regional Player of the Year, put himself in good position to win the title again in 2005 with two events remaining.
The final round coincided with the first day of spring and brought enjoyable playing conditions throughout the day. The demanding championship layout of Pine Dunes golf course stood up to the test of the top amateur golfers from across the North Texas region.
