Northern California (NCGA/CIF) Girls Championship
VACAVILLE,CA (November 8, 2005) -- On a windy, testing day and on a tough, par-71, 6,021-yard Green Tree GC, Monte Vista High of Danville proved true to the consistent approach it had utilized all year.
With all six players shooting within 13 strokes of one another, the team was able to defend its 2004 championship by seven strokes. "The strength of our team is depth," said first-year head coach Cheryl Burleigh, a chemistry teacher at the school. "On any day, anyone can go low. The girls work hard to develop consistency - they really help each other out."
Monte Vista was led Jordan Ontiveros, whose 79 was closely followed by teammate Michelle Hatsushi's 81 in the format that takes the best five of six scores. As testament to its depth, no Monte Vista player finished amongst the top seven scores. "It feels great to win," Coach Burleigh said, "and there were some great scores here today." With the win, Monte Vista becomes the second team to repeat as champion, following in the footsteps of Sacramento St. Francis, who won the first five championships.
The top three teams qualified for the state tournament, to be played November 16 at the PGA Southern California GC in Beaumont. Along with Monte Vista, Oak Ridge of El Dorado Hills and Santa Catalina of Monterey booked trips to the state tournament. True to consistent form, all three top finishing teams had earlier won respective sectional championships.
The individual title was captured by an unheralded freshman, 14-year-old Joy Kim of Albany High in Berkeley. Kim's even-par 71 was good for a three-shot win. "I putted really well today," the champion said, "I was concentrating really well. I have a lot of confidence now - I was nervous before." Kim's steady approach to her game paid dividends on a day when only her score was equal to par: "I just want to shoot my best. It doesn't really matter to me where I finish."
The top six individuals not on qualifying teams moved on to the state tournament. University of Arkansas-bound Corrina Rees of Pacific Grove was runner-up at 74. Third place was captured by Ariana Patterson of Santa Catalina while the last of the medals was earned by Mia Kabasakalis of College Prep. After a playoff, defending state champion Joanne Lee of Carlmont, Hannah Summerhays of Del Campo and Nicole Ferrero of Lodi secured spots in the state field.
