PALM BEACH GARDENS, Fla. (May 28 2012) -- When all was said and done though the day belonged to Corey Pereira of Cameron Park, CA . Seventeen year old Pereira, a first year player with the FCWT, entered the Championship with a win at Classic Club and finished no worse than tied for 6th place in 5 FCWT tournaments during the regular season.
On Friday night, Corey was awarded the West Region Player of the Year award for his outstanding play during the season. On Saturday, Pereira set right to work on winning the Championship.
Corey’s opening round of 69 gave him the lead on Saturday and he worked hard to keep that lead from then on. On Sunday, residual thunderstorms from sub-tropical system Beryl delayed play for two hours.
Several groups of players were unable to finish Round Two and had to resume play on Monday morning at 7:30 am. Corey was one of those players. His round of 74 put him in a four-way tie for the lead when the players headed back out to the golf course for a 10:30 shotgun for the Final Round.
Corey came on strong on Monday shooting a one under par 71 to finish at 2 under for the tournament – five strokes ahead of 2nd place.
Carl Yuan of Lake Mary, FL finished in second place with rounds of 75-68-76. Maxime Blandin of Martinique finished with a solid round of even par 72 to also tie for 2nd place. Also finishing tied for 2nd was David Snyder of McAllen, TX who earned the Boys 13-15 division Central Region Player of the Year award on Friday night.
