PALM CITY, Fla. - Darryl Osler made two eagles enroute to a career round Sunday at the Fox Club as he teamed with Tom Fiocchi to win the 20th annual Dodge Four-Ball tournament conducted by the Palm Beach County Golf Association.
Osler and Fiocchi posted a four-ball stroke play score of 10 under par 62 for a two-day total of 130 to win by a shot. It was the first PBCGA title for both players.
Tied for second at 131 in the 26-team field were David Abell and Eoghan O'Connell with the father-son team of Gil and Scott Turner, both posting final round scores of 65. They had shared the first round lead with 66s Saturday at the nearby Florida Club.
Osler, 44, a Boca Raton pool builder, eagled the par-5 eighth and 18th holes and added four birdies. He hit driver and 7-iron to 15 feet at the eighth, driver and 5-wood to three feet at the 18th. He birdied Nos. 1, 2, 12 and 17 for 64 on his own ball.
"It's the first time I've broken 80 here," Osler said. "I hated this course but we played it all the way back today and that let me hit my driver (more often)."
Fiocchi, 49, of Palm Beach Gardens, sales manager for a food services company, also birdied the first hole as well as Nos. 3 and 13. "It was a fun day," he said. "We decided to play in all three team events this year and we finally won one." They tied for 14th in the Arrigo Dodge Four-Ball and tied for fourth in the first flight at the Mid-Senior Four-Ball, both in May.
Abell had a chance to tie but was high on a 30-foot eagle putt at the 18th hole. Scott Turner sank an eight footer for eagle at 18 but a team bogey at the par-3 seventh proved costly.
Coincidentally, Abell beat Osler 2 and 1 in the finals of the County Mid-Amateur last month.
Next on the PBCGA tournament schedule: Nov. 11-13, Senior Four-Ball, and Nov. 19, Finale Four-Ball, both at PGA National.
