Century Club Matches: Pros Defeat Ams, 14-10
- The Amateurs are shown below
San Diego, California (Nov 6, 2005) -- The 34th Annual Century Club Matches
concluded today, with San Diego Club Professionals topping their amateur counterparts
by a total margin of 14-10.
As the final singles matches played out -- with the last three going down to
the 18th hole -- the finish seemed much closer than the final tally.
Starting the day 1 point behind, the amateurs won four of the first six matches
to take a 9 1/2 to 8 1/2 lead. Peter Roberts scored the most convincing win,
a 4-up victory over Chuck Minerd. Clay Long, Pat Duncan, and Gerry Simoni also
won matches while Mike Nokes and Shay Blechynden notched the two professional
victories.
The tide turned convincingly over the next three matches, which were all won
by the professionals. But with the final three matches running neckand neck,
the final outcome could have gone either way. When Brian Bazzell and Greg Cassagranda
finished all-square, the amateurs saw the writing on the wall, and in fact the
next two matches were won by the professionals on the 18th hole.
A spirited competition at The Santaluz Club.
