Notre Dame wins Big East Championship
REUNION, Fla. (May 1, 2012) -- Notre Dame senior Max Scodro became just the second player in conference history to repeat as the BIG EAST individual champion as he led the Irish to its second consecutive BIG EAST Men’s Golf Championship Tuesday at The Watson Course at Reunion Resort & Club.

The Irish posted a three-day total of 852 (284-286-282) to win their second-straight title and their eighth championship in program history. The Irish earned the BIG EAST’s automatic bid to the NCAA Men’s Golf Championships and will learn their postseason destination when regional sites are announced May 7 at 9 p.m.

Notre Dame, which held a six-stroke lead after two days of competition, saw two golfers shoot rounds of four-under-par 68 Tuesday, helping the Irish to a final-round 282. Notre Dame finished 16 strokes ahead of second-place Louisville (285-292-291—868), marking the largest margin of victory in the BIG EAST Championship since Virginia Tech’s 17-stroke win in 2002.

Irish senior Max Scodro was the medalist for the second straight year after shooting a six-under-par 210, good for the sixth-best 54-hole score in tournament history. He posted a one-over 73 Tuesday, which followed an opening-round 69 and a second-round 68. Scodro is the first competitor to win back-to-back titles since Pat Fogarty of St. John’s won three-straight from 1982-84.

Other top-10 finishers for the Irish included senior Chris Walker, who finished tied for third at 212 (72-72-68). Junior Paul McNamara finished in fifth place with a 213 (68-72-73) while sophomore Niall Platt finished in a tie for 10th place at 217 (75-74-68).

Louisville senior Justin Dorward helped the Cardinals to a second-place finish by taking second in the individual standings. Dorward opened the tournament with a five-under-par 67 and turned in back-to-back rounds of 72 to finish one stroke behind Scodro at 211. The Cardinals had two other finishers in the top 10 as senior Chris Biuso (71-73-73—217) and freshman Max Walz (75-72-70—217) finished the tournament tied for 10th at one over.

Villanova finished the championship in third place at six over par with a total of 870 (293-292-285). Junior Michael Kania finished at four-under (70-70-72—212) to take third in the individual standings.

St. John’s had four top-20 finishers to take fourth in the team standings (294-290-292—876) as Ryan McCormick of finished tied for seventh place at one under (75-69-71).

Georgetown posted a score of 292 Tuesday to finish 19 over par at 883 (294-297-292), taking fifth place. The Hoyas’ Taylor Hall placed sixth place at two-under (70-71-73).

Connecticut took sixth place (295-296-294—885), followed by Seton Hall (295-300-292—887), Marquette (299-301-298—898), USF (297-308-297—902), DePaul (303-302-301—906), Rutgers (312-306-304—922) and Cincinnati (313-305-309—927).
