Riverlands leads Louisiana Club Team
KINDER, Louis. (April 28, 2012) -- Riverlands Golf & Country Club from LaPlace fired a 12-under par 130 on Saturday to take the lead after first round play in the Louisiana Golf Association Club Team Championship at Koasati Pines at Coushatta Golf Club in Kinder. In a format where a club team counts two of their three four-ball scores in the first round, Robert Doyle, Jr. and Jason Noto fired a six-under par 65 that was matched by their fellow team members Andrew Noto and James Fuselier. Riverlands has a two-shot lead over OakWing Golf Club from Alexandria.

OakWing was led by the team of Craig Campo and Rod Baronet, who shot the low round of the day, an impressive seven-under 64. Baronet and Campo made the turn at three under after eagles on the par 5 ninth hole. Baronet, the reigning LGA Senior Amateur Champion, would contribute three more birdies on the back nine at holes 10, 14, and 17. Campo birdied the par 4 fifteenth, as the pair had a bogey free round. The Louisiana South Amateur Golf Tour from Lafayette is in third place, seven strokes back at 137. Their team was led by Britt Guillory and David Griffin who shot a four-under 67. Paul Broussard and Tony Escoyne shot 68, while Ron Hardin and Greg Bourque shot 69, to put LeTriomphe Golf & Country Club of Broussard in a tie for third at 137. There are three teams tied for fifth place at 139: Atchafalaya Golf Club at Idlewild of Patterson, Hebert Municipal of Lafayette, and last year’s champions, Squirrel Run Golf Club of New Iberia.

Clubs participating in the 24th LGA Club Team Championship are represented by six-man teams. Saturday’s play consisted of four-ball stroke play with each team counting the two best of their three four-ball scores. Sunday’s play consists of individual stroke play with a team’s score being determined by counting the best four of six individual scores. With the number of scores being counted on Sunday doubling those counted on Saturday, no first round lead is insurmountable.

The weather at Koasati Pines was gorgeous on Saturday with the wind picking up around mid-morning making club selection difficult for those starting later in the day. The course measured just over 6,700 yards and played to a par of 71 on Saturday. Sunday’s final round starting times will begin a 7:30 AM on split #1 and #10 tees with the leaders set to go off #1 tee at 9:00, 9:10, and 9:20 AM.
