AUGUSTA, Ga. (April 1, 2012) -- The Texas Longhorns won their sixth tournament title of the 2011-12 season in a two-hole playoff against the Augusta State Jaguars at the ASU Invitational in what became a showdown between the top-ranked Men’s Golf team and the defending back-to-back national champions. Freshman Jordan Spieth and senior Dylan Frittelli – the Nos. 1 and 2 collegiate players nationally – combined for four birdies on the par-5 ninth hole at Forest Hills Golf Club for Texas’ second-consecutive win this spring.

Texas (282-277-279=838) and Augusta State (283-276-279) entered Sunday’s final round knotted atop the leaderboard and both teams carded 9-under-par 279s for a share of the 54-hole lead. Following regulation play, Frittelli, Spieth, senior Alex Moon, junior Julio Vegas and sophomore Toni Hakula returned to the designated playoff hole alongside the Jaguars and both teams played the hole at 2-under with birdies by Frittelli and Speith and the Jaguars’ Brendan Gillins and Alex Wennstam. On the second playoff attempt, Frittelli and Spieth again made a pair of birdies while the Jaguars played the same hole at 1-under to seal the Longhorns’ win.

Frittelli (68-67-68=203, -13) bookended his final round with bogeys on the first and 18th holes while making six birdies on the day. Needing a par on 18 for a share of the individual title and the outright team victory, Frittelli’s 30-foot birdie attempt went nearly four feet past the pin and he missed his par putt for bogey. He finished the event in second place, one stroke behind TCU’s Julien Brun (68-65-69=202, -14).

Spieth’s final round culminated with seven birdies – including five on the back nine – and a lone bogey on the third hole. Spieth (72-68-66=206, -10) finished in sole possession of fifth place after beginning the round in a tie for ninth.Vegas (72-70-73) finished tied for 26th place at 1-under 215. Moon (70-72-74) and Hakula (73-74-72) tied for 30th and 48th places, respectively.
