Pocknall cards 65 to win Texas South Mid-Am
David Pocknell
2012 Texas South Mid-Am Champ
San Antonio, TX (March 25, 2012) – A short
fog delay pushed back the start of the final
round of the 2012 South Mid-Amateur
Championship at The Club at Sonterra’s
North Course in San Antonio. The overcast
morning sky quickly burned off and the sun
came out as David Pocknall fired a final
round 7-under par 65 to win his third South
Mid-Amateur Championship over Mike
Booker.
Pocknall, of Katy, started the day five
shots back of second round leader Randy
Lance. After two pars to begin his round,
Pocknall recorded birdies on the par three
3rd, par five 5th, and par three 6th holes
to quickly make his way up the
leaderboard. Pocknall made three more
pars to finish his front nine at 3-under par
33.
Making his way to the back nine, Pocknall’s
putter remained on fire with another birdie
on the par four 11th hole. Soon after that
Pocknall was able to run birdies in on the
par five 13th and par three 14th holes. A
final birdie, his seventh of the round, came
on the uphill par four 17th hole. With a
par saving putt on the 18th hole, Pocknall
came in with his lowest round ever in a
tournament at 7-under par 65 (33-32).
With an impressive three day total of 1-
over par 217 (73-79-65), Pocknall was able
to secure a six shot victory over Mike
Booker, of The Woodlands.
Booker, the 2005 South Mid-Amateur
Champion, began the day one shot back at
6-over par 148. Trouble arose quickly with
bogeys on his first two holes, only to erase
one with a birdie on the par three 3rd hole.
Booker proceeded to give that back with a
bogey on the par four 4th hole. One more
birdie and bogey on the 7th and 8th holes,
respectively, found the former University of
Houston Cougar at 2-over par 38 as he
made the turn.
A bogey on the par three 10th hole was
soon wiped way with a birdie on the par
four 11th hole. Booker steadied the ship
with four straight pars before carding his
last bogey of the day on the par four 16th
hole. Booker finished his final round at 3-
over par 75 for a three day total of 7-over
par 223 (73-75-75) to finish alone in
second place.
First round leader Jeff New, also of The
Woodlands, finished in third place at 8-
over par 224 (72-76-76). Second round
leader Randy Lance, of The Woodlands,
finished in a tie for fourth place with
League City’s Blanton Hansen at 10-over
par 228.
