San Antonio, TX (March 24, 2012) -- Fog
and
misty conditions greeted the field Saturday
morning for the second round of the 2012
South Mid-Amateur Championship, played
on
the North Course of The Club at Sonterra in
San Antonio. The sun finally broke through
as
play concluded during the early afternoon,
which saw Randy Lance take a one stroke
lead
over Jeff New and Mike Booker heading
into
Sunday’s final round.
Lance, of The Woodlands, will head into
Sunday’s final round after a second round
score of 2-over par 74. Lance started the
day
off with a birdie on the opening par five
1st
hole. A bogey on the 2nd hole was soon
erased with three straight birdies on holes
4-6.
A second bogey on the par four 7th hole
was
followed by two pars to make the turn at
2-
under par 34.
Lance started his back nine with a par on
the
par three 10th hole, before picking up
three
straight bogeys on holes 11-13. The 2006
and
2010 South Mid-Amateur Champion was
able to
run off a string of pars before giving one
stroke
back with a bogey on the par four 18th
hole.
Lance will head into the final round at 3-
over
par 147 (73-74).
Sitting just one stroke back at 4-over par
148
is first round leader Jeff New and Mike
Booker,
both of The Woodlands.
New, who carded four birdies in his
opening
round of even par 72, was only able to
muster
one birdie during his second round.
Starting on
the backside, New found trouble with
bogeys
on four of the last five holes to make the
turn
at 4-over par 40. A birdie on the par three
3rd
hole was cancelled out with a bogey on his
second-to-last hole of the day, the par four
8th hole. New finished the day at 4-over
par
76 (40-36).
Mike Booker, the 2005 South Mid-Amateur
Champion, had an up and down day en
route
to a 3-over par 75. A front side that saw
Booker card only one par, that coming on
the
par four 7th hole, also saw four birdies and
four bogeys to turn at even par 36. His
back
nine included two bogeys and a double
bogey,
before recording a birdie on the par four
16th
hole for a 3-over par 39.
Austin’s Kody King and Blanton Hansen, of
League City, find themselves two strokes
off of
Lance’s lead at 5-over par 149 heading into
the final round. After an opening round of
6-
over par 78, King was able to rattle off a
1-
under par 71 in his second round. Hansen,
one
half of the team from the 2008 State Four-
Ball
Championship that claimed victory on the
very
same North Course, shot a 3-over par 75
during his second round.
