Homan, Willis lead Mississippi Mid-Am
HATTIESBURG, Miss. (March 23, 2012) -- Clay Homan and Robert Willis are co-medalist with their opening round of 5 under par 67. Homan and Willis we will be awarded the Randy Sullivan Memorial trophy. Two players are tied for 3rd place two strokes back at 69 are Richard Reed and Michael Hammett. Rounding out the top 5 spots are Lee Gladden, Justin Elliott, and Ben Snow at even par. The weather conditions were absolutely beautiful and the course conditions were better than expected. Frank Ogletree and his staff did an excellent job of getting the course in great condition after 7 inches of rain in the last 36 hours. The starting times were delayed to allow the course to drain and be prepared to its best condition.
Hattiesburg Country Club has hosted many state championships over the years and is excited to host the Mid-Amateur this weekend. The field of 72 players includes seven past champions. Former mid-amateur champions include Clay Homan, John Lang, Scott Rhodes, Steve Wilson ( 2008 USGA Mid-Amateur Champion), Ben Snow and Ricky Sims.
The winner of the Mid-Amateur will take home the prestigious Bob Travis Memorial trophy. The Bob Travis Memorial Trophy was provided by a committee of friends of Bob Travis. The committee also provides winners of all of the MGA state champions with beautiful awards.
