New England (NEGA) Senior Amateur
WALLINGFORD, CT (October 4, 2005) -- Despite a late charge by a pair of golfers from Rhode Island, Gene Ryzewicz (Connecticut GC – CT) held on with a final-round score of 2-over par 73 to capture the 2005 New England Senior Championship by one stroke this afternoon in his home state of Connecticut. This year’s event was held at Wallingford Country Club.

Ryzewicz, who entered the final round with a one-stroke lead over the field and who finished with a final score of 1-over par 143, edged George Pirie (Valley CC - RI) and Thomas Goryl (Wannamoisett CC - RI) by one stroke.

Following his stellar first round in which he was the only player to shoot under par, Ryzewicz was unable to mimic that same performance today, especially on the front nine. After beginning his round on the 1st hole, Ryzewicz made a double bogey on the 370-yard, par 4 2nd hole and then followed that up with a bogey on the 414-yard, par 4 3rd hole. He quickly regained his composure to make par on his next six holes. Steady play was the name of the game on the back nine as he posted all pars and what would be an all-important birdie on the 465-yard, par 5 13th hole for a 1-under par 35 score on the back nine. In dramatic fashion, Ryzewicz left his third shot on the 18th hole 20 feet short of the hole but drained the long putt for a nice par to seal the victory.

Making a late run for the title were Pirie and Goryl, who both posted outstanding final rounds. Goryl registered one of the lowest rounds of the tournament – a 2-under par 69 – this afternoon that featured three birdies and only one bogey. His bogeys on the 4th and 5th holes were overshadowed by birdies on the 3rd, 9th, 12th and 15th holes. Pirie, meanwhile, suffered through an up-and-down front nine with two birdies and two bogeys. After making birdie on the 205-yard, par 3 4th hole, he went on to bogey the back-to-back par 4s on the 7th and 8th holes. He quickly rebounded with birdies on the 9th and 10th holes. He finished his round with two birdies and one bogey for a final round score of 1-under par 70.

Finishing in fourth place with a score of 3-over par 145 was B. Shawn McLoughlin (Ridgewood CC - CT), who posted a 1-over par 72 this afternoon. The biggest mover up the leaderboard, however, was Charles Claffey (Farmington Woods - CT), who finished in fifth place after registering the low round of the tournament – a 3-under par 68. En route to his superb round, Claffey made only one bogey – on the 10th hole – and four birdies on the 1st, 13th, 15th and 16th holes.

Capturing the title in the Super Senior division was Bob McDonald (Charles River CC - MA), who finished with a score of 10-over par 152. McDonald beat out another Massachusetts Super Senior division competitor, Fan Gaudette (Hickory Ridge CC - MA), by one stroke.

Due to foggy conditions in the Wallingford area, the entire field competed in a shotgun which began at 10:00 a.m.
