SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. (Mar. 10, 2012) -- After a long day at Harding Park and the last good day of weather the final match is now set for the women's finals at the 2012 San Francisco City Championship.
Alex Wong, 17, a senior at St. Ignatius High is set to play 15-year-old Jayshree Sarathy, a sophomore at Gunn High.
Sarathy made her way to the finals with a quarterfinal win over Lynne Cowan of Davis 6 & 5. Although not a long hitter, Sarathy was relentless with her masterful short game getting up and down from everywhere.
After a comfortable break after her early win, Sarathy went on the play Hannah Soderstein. After several bogeys were exchanged by both players on the front nine a birdie by Soderstein at 9 gave her a 1-up advantage starting the back nine.
Losing with bogeys at 10 and 13 and halving 14 with bogeys, Sarathy was now 3-down with 4 holes to play. Soderstein dwindled her lead losing at 15, 16 and 17 with bogeys. They halved 18 with pars and went on to sudden death. Sarathy won on the second playoff hole when Soderstein bogeyed and she parred.
The 36-hole final match is set to start at 7:30 a.m. and proves to be a challenging day as a storm approaches in the afternoon.
