The Crane Cup was started in 2012 by Houston business magnate Jim Crane, who in the previous year took control of the Floridian on the same day that he closed the deal to purchase the Houston Astros baseball team. Crane created his namesake tournament to be a celebration of competitive amateur golf, and has competed himself in the senior division. Five years later, both ventures had grown to be huge successes: the Crane Cup as an important national mid-amateur/senior championship, and the Houston Astros as World Series champions, the first in the history of the franchise.
