ROCHESTER, NY (September 25, 2005) -- Matthew Clarke of The Country Club of Troy emerged victorious at the New York State Golf Association’s 22nd Men’s Mid-Amateur Championship at The Country Club of Rochester in Rochester, NY. Clarke’s final day two-over par 72 and three-day total of two-over par 212 was good enough to hold off the field after beginning the day with a 5 shot advantage. Playing in the final group with Tony Hejna of Crag Burn GC, Clarke’s lead quickly dwindled to just one after the first four holes when Clarke bogeyed holes two and four and Hejna took advantage with birdies at each. However, Clarke was able to regain his five shot lead with birdies at 8 and 9, which Hejna bogeyed. The third player in the final group, defending Mid-Am Champion Jim Roy of Bellevue CC, started the day six shots back and shot even par on the first nine to climb within 5 shots.
The rollercoaster day continued for Clarke on the last nine holes of the Championship. On the par-three fourteenth hole, Clarke sailed his tee shot over the green and out of bounds, resulting in a triple bogey and reducing his lead to just two strokes. Once again, he was able to regain his composure and birdied holes fifteen, sixteen and eighteen to win by six shots. Both Hejna and Roy shot three-over par 73 on Sunday and finished second and third at 218 and 219 respectively. The Top-12 players and ties received exemptions into the 2006 Mid-Amateur Championship to be played at Brookfield Country Club in Clarence, NY.
