PEBBLE BEACH, Calif. (Oct. 29, 2011) -- After thousands of team match rounds, the Del Rio CC defeated Kings River GCC to capture the 23rd Annual NCGA Team Match Championship title at Poppy Hills GC.

Del Rio’s victory in the final was its second in as many days, claiming the Saturday league title with a win over Pittsburg’s Delta View the day before. Kings River advanced to the finals after just narrowly defeating Apple Mountain GR in the semifinals, while Del Rio proceeded to the finals after a large margin of victory.

“The win was a team effort, everyone played beautifully” said acting Del Rio captain Bill Tonge. “We had a very consistent season. We built the team from the highest handicap down to the lowest, and it turned out to be a winning formula.”

The Del Rio pair of Dennis Culbertson and Don Barbe was the only duo to sweep their competitors, finishing 1-up in each of their individual matches and as a whole against Kings River’s Alex Marriot and Dan Cowherd. In other matches, Jeff McKay defeated Dale Revels 7 and 5 while Brad Haskin beat Rick Cowin to mark the highest margins of victory for both Del Rio and the championship round overall.

The third place match came down to the wire as Pittsburg’s Delta View and Apple Mountain were tied at 18 at the end of regulation. Pittsburg’s Delta View claimed the title after winning a two-hole sudden-death playoff.

The popular championship is the conclusion to a summer-long competition involving more than 200 teams from across Northern California. The 12-man teams competed in four-ball (best ball) matches concurrent with singles’ matches, with each match worth two points, or a total of six in each group. More than 15,000 rounds were played to bring the final four clubs – Del Rio, Delta View, Apple Mountain and Kings River – to the Monterey Peninsula.
