NCGA Team Match Championship: Del Rio, Kings River move on
PEBBLE BEACH, Calif. (Oct. 28, 2011) -- The teams of Del Rio CC and Kings River GCC emerged victorious from the first round to face off in tomorrow’s final of the NCGA Team Match Championship at Poppy Hills.

In the Thursday League, Del Rio defeated Pittsburg’s Delta View CC by a score of 22 to 14. The team was led by strong performances from Tim Speer and Jeff McKay, each winning 8 and 6 in their matches. Additionally, McKay and partner Dennis Culbertson triumphed 6 and 5 as a team against Delta View’s James Schroeger and Dale Drewry.

The final match was the strongest for Delta View, with Frank Morrison and Mike Lane scoring 5 out of the 6 possible points over Del Rio’s Brad Haskin and Arthur Seeger.

The Saturday League saw a closer match-up, as Kings River GCC narrowly edged out Apple Mountain GR 20 to 16.

Two Kings River teams went undefeated, with Mike Cassidy and Greg Lopez beating Floyd Miller and Bill Sowders while Blaine Sanders and Dale Revels upset Ron Chamberlain and Steve Dringenberg.

Apple Mountain made a play for the lead in the final match, with Heath Dringenberg and Anthony Rodriguez scoring 4 of the 6 possible points and ousting Rick Cowan and Chuck Nicholls 4 and 3, but couldn’t make up enough ground to take the lead.

The popular championship is the conclusion to a summer-long competition involving more than 200 teams from across Northern California. The 12-man teams competed in four-ball (best ball) matches concurrent with singles’ matches, with each match worth two points, or a total of six in each group. More than 15,000 rounds were played to bring the final four clubs – Del Rio, Delta View, Apple Mountain and Kings River – to the Monterey Peninsula.

Apple Mountain GR and Pittsburg’s Delta View CC face off in the third-place round at 7:30 a.m. The championship round between Del Rio CC and Kings River GCC begins at 8:30 a.m. Both rounds are at Poppy Hills.
