Mavrikes and Register claim Washington Metro Senior Four Ball Championship

COLLEGE PARK, MD (Oct. 13, 2011) -- Fueled by a potent mix of five successive threes at the beginning of the back nine, George Mavrikes (Congressional) and John Register (Cattail Creek) fired a five-under par 65 to nip Don Meyer (UMD) and Bob Rehman (UMD) for the 2011 WMGA Senior Four-Ball title at the University of Maryland Golf Course. Two strokes further back at 69 was the pair of teams Larry Den (Manor) and James Castagna (Manor) and George Washburn (Holly Hills) and Donnie Blanks (Holly Hills). 70s were recorded by Bill Calhoun (Beaver Creek) and Ken Kasai (Beaver Creek), Ron Bubes (Woodmont) and Bill Apple (Lansdowne) and Jim Andrews (Mt. Vernon) and Don Kelly (Mt. Vernon).

At even par 71 were the teams of Ned Longson (Manor) and Mark Schechter (Manor), Barry Flaer (Worthington Manor) and Jack Walsh ((Maryland National) and Don Jeanes (South Riding) and Lynn Wessman (Army Navy).

While Meyer and Rehman streaked out in 33, beginning at #7 Mavrikes and Register notched seven threes in the next eight holes with birdies on #s 7, 10 and 12 and an eagle by Register on #13. With a 32 on the back nine, Mavrikes and Register were able to pick up the necessary three strokes on Meyer and Rehman.
