Fred Rescigno, Jr., to face Brandon Nelson for the Atlanta Amateur Match Play Championship
JOHNS CREEK, Ga. – Fred Rescigno, Jr., of Suwanee will face Brandon Nelson of Roswell in the finals of the 93rd annual Atlanta Amateur Match Play Championship, taking place at Rivermont Golf and Country Club, October 6-9.
To make it to the final match, the 41-year-old Rescigno picked up four wins along the way. In his round of 32 match, Rescigno beat Mark Benefield of Duluth, 5 and 4, and then in the round of 16, he beat Michael Toler of Marietta, 2 up. In this morning’s quarterfinals match, Rescigno took on Michael Morrison of Roswell, coming out ahead, 1 up. In this afternoon’s semifinals, Rescigno defeated the reigning two-time Georgia Public Links champion Billy Mitchell of Roswell, 3 and 1, to advance to the final match.
Nelson’s road to the finals came after notching four close wins himself. In his first two matches Nelson defeated two players from Marietta, Mel Mendenhall, 2 and 1, and Matthew Hayes, 2 up. In this morning’s quarterfinals, he finished on top of Mike Cromer of Peachtree Corners, 3 and 1, and in this afternoon’s semis, Nelson beat Dave Poteet of Suwanee, 1 up.
At the 2003 Atlanta Amateur Match Play Championship, Rescigno mad e it to the semifinals before losing to eventual champion Scott Pitts of Cornelia, 1 up. Nelson finished as stroke-play medalist at the 2008 event before losing to eventual champion David Noll, Jr., of Dalton, 20 holes, in the round of 16.
The 18-hole championship match is scheduled for 8:10 a.m. Sunday.
