Two Tied At the Top of 2011 Texas Mid-Amateur

THE WOODLANDS, TX, (Sept. 30, 2011) -- Cool and windy conditions welcomed the players at the 2011 Texas Mid-Amateur Championship presented by Breitling which is being held at The Club at Carlton Woods. One hundred and thirty-two of the state’s best players found themselves in a battle with one of the state’s premiere facilities with just two players being able to post under par scores. Players look to make a move heading into tomorrow’s second round as the field will be cut to the low fifty-four and ties for Sunday.

Beau Davis, winner of the 2011 West Texas Amateur, sits atop the leader board with fellow competitor, Matt Sanders. Davis found trouble early as he was five over par through his first three holes. He quickly recovered with eight birdies on his way to a one under par round of 71. Matt Sanders also found trouble early in his round as he made double bogey, six, on his opening hole. Sanders then caught fire making four consecutive birdies on holes #17, #18, #1, and #2. He then added another birdie on #4, putting him at four under par with just five holes remaining. After a few bogeys and a double coming in, Sanders matched Davis’ round one score of 71.

Eleven players find themselves within three shots of the lead heading into tomorrow’s second round. Included are Mike McCaffrey, the 2011 South Mid-Amateur Champion, and Aaron Hickman, 2011 North Mid-Amateur Champion.  Past champions, Terrence Miskell and Mike Booker, find themselves just four shots back of the lead after opening rounds of three over par, 75.
