BLYTHEWOOD, SC (Sept. 23, 2011) -- John Dennis III of Greenville, SC holed a 10-foot birdie putt on the third playoff hole to defeat Logan Jackson of Winston-Salem, NC. Dennis and Jackson stood at six-under par 138 for the championship.
The win is Dennis’s first CGA championship title although he has amassed a very impressive golf resume that includes a SCGA South Carolina Senior title, two Dogwood Senior crowns and a 10-time Greenville Country Club champion.
“I hit the ball as well as I have in 6 or 7 years this week,” stated Dennis. “Other than missing one short putt I putted the ball great too”.
Playing in the same group, Dennis and Jackson knew how each other stood throughout the round. It was a back and forth battle where the lead changed hands on the back nine. What they did not know was that Mark Wagner of Statesville, NC was making a move of his own on the other side of the golf course and posted a five-under par 67 to take the clubhouse lead.
After a bogey by Jackson on the 17th hole, he and Dennis came to the final hole tied at six-under par.
“I almost hit my tee shot out of bounds on 18 and had no shot to the green,” Dennis noted. He proceeded to hit a sand wedge to in front of the green and was able to get up and down including canning a crucial 12-foot putt to remain tied with Jackson.
“It was a real treat to be paired with Logan today and glad we both played well.”
Defending champion Russ Perry of Winston-Salem, NC carded a one-over par 73 to finish in a tie for 53rd place.
