Cory Renfrew
2011 PNGA Mid-Amateur Champion
CAMPBELL RIVER, BC CANADA (Sept. 15,
2011) -- Cory Renfrew, of Cordova Bay Golf
Club, shot a final-round 4-under-par 68 to
come from behind and capture the BC Mid-
Amateur Men’s Championship at Storey
Creek Golf Club in Campbell River, BC.
Renfrew, 25, carded four birdies on the
day, including the winner on 18, to finish with
a tournament score of 7-under-par 209.
“Heading into the tournament I
imagined I was going to need a putt to
win,” said Renfrew. “When I was
on my way to the 18th hole a friend told me I
needed a birdie. I ended up with a 6 foot putt
straight down the hill and I knew it was my
moment and I had to take advantage.”
Finishing in second place with an overall
score of 6-under-par 210 was Brent Wilson, of
Gorge Vale Golf Club, who also posted a final-
round 68.
Third place, and the Master-40 division
title, went to Stephen Watson, of Zone 6, with
a tournament score of 4-under-par 212.
“Beginning the day I thought
I’d have to shoot in the 60’s in
order to have a chance at the overall
championship,” said Watson, 44, of
Nanoose Bay. “On 17 I was one shot
back, and since I knew I had the Master-40
sewn up, I thought I’d go for it. I was
in-between clubs and didn’t hit it solid
and ended up with a double bogey. I made
some bad choices today but managed to
recover with a birdie on 18 to end up with a 70
which I’m pleased with.”
Defending Champion Greg Koster, who lead
both the first and seconds rounds, faltered
today and finished the tournament at 3-under-
par 213. His problems started on the par-4 9th
hole with a double bogey and carried over to
the back 9 where he made two more double
bogeys to go along with four birdies. His final-
round score of 2-over-par 74 was only good
enough for 4th place.
The Canadian Mid-Amateur Championship
will be held September 5-9, 2011, at the
Coppinwood Golf Club in Uxbridge, ON.
Representing BC in the Interprovincial Team
Championship will be Cory Renfrew, Brent
Wilson and Stephen Watson.
