Harper sets pace at the PNGA Men's Mid-Amateur
EVERETT, WASH. (Sept 14, 2011) -- Sandy Harper of Nanaimo, B.C. fired an impressive 7-under par 65 to lead the field at the 27th Annual Pacific Northwest Men’s Mid-Amateur Championship conducted by the Pacific Northwest Golf Association (PNGA) at Everett Golf and Country Club in Everett, Wash. 95 players competed in cool overcast conditions today on the historic par 72, 6,208 yard championship layout.

Harper, the 2007 champion, got off to a hot start making birdies on 3 of his first 5 holes and capped-off a stellar front nine with one more birdie on the par 4, 9th hole to make the turn at 4-under par 31. Harper finished in fine fashion making 3 more birdies on his final 5 holes to complete a flawless opening round.

Reigning Washington State Mid-Amateur Champion, Stephen Lee of Everett, Wash. sits alone in 2nd place one shot off the lead after a notable 6-under par 66 that consisted of 7 birdies and a lone bogey. 2002 champion Erik Hanson of Kirkland, Wash. is two shots back in 3rd place after carding a 5-under par 67. Todd Tibke of Snohomish, Wash. is alone in 4th place at 4-under par 68 while returning champion Dan Whitaker of Cle Elum, Wash., 2001 champion Alex Stamey of Mill Creek, Wash. and Jack Kelly of Seattle, Wash. are tied in 5th place at 2-under par 70

ABOUT THE PNGA Mid-Amateur

Format: 54-hole Stroke Play Competition (Gross only). The field will be cut to the low 60 players and ties for the final round.

Age Limit: Entrants must be 25 years of age or older by the start of the tournament.

Handicap Limit: Entrants must have a USGA Handicap Index or Golf Canada Handicap Factor of 8.4 or less.
