Smunk brothers win SCGA Senior Better Ball

SANTEE, SC. (Sept 12, 2011) -- Bill Smunk of Kingstree has played in the SCGA Senior Better Ball Championship for a number of years. For many of those years Smunk partnered with long-time friend, Neal Baker of Charleston. “Bake”, as he was affectionately known as by friends, lost an unfortunate battle with cancer just a few weeks ago. Needing a new partner, Smunk turned to his brother John (Port Royal), a great player in his own right to fill the vacancy left by Baker’s untimely passing. It proved to be a wise choice as the brother tandem teamed up to claim the championship by four shots, scoring a two day total of 13 under par 131.

John Smunk recorded four of the team’s birdies on Sunday in route to a final round 66.

Al Hogan (Myrtle Beach) and Charlie Moore (N. Myrtle Beach) tied for second place with Jim Faulkner (Greenville) and Bo Leslie (Simpsonville) at 9 under par 135.

Tom Bryant (Columbia) and Marvin Nesmith (Lugoff) tied the low round of the day (66) to take top honors in the First Flight with a two day total of 7 under par 137.

The 2011 SCGA Senior Better Ball Championship is one of 19 major championships conducted by the South Carolina Golf Association. The 38th Annual event was played on the 6,413 yard, par 72 golf course at Santee Cooper Country Club in Santee, SC.
