NCGA Senior Four Ball: Thompson/Berg Win in Playoff
With NCGA President Bill Giffen

PEBBLE BEACH (September 13, 2005) -- Senior Player-of the-Year point leader Rob Thompson of Merced and NCGA Past President Bob Berg of Riverview survived a four team playoff Tuesday to capture the seventh annual Senior Four-Ball Championship at Poppy Hills GC.

Thompson drained a 12-foot birdie putt on the first playoff hole to add this win to his long list of accomplishments in 2005. The Merced member won the Senior Championship in April and is well on his way to breaking the senior points record, while Berg, his partner is a consistent force in NCGA events. After an impressive first-round 66, the duo backed up in the final round with a 70 but were able to bounce back with a birdie-2 on the first playoff hole.

The final round started with 15 different groups within four strokes of the lead. Berg and Thompson were joined in the playoff by Shelton Washburn of Meadow Club and Lou Alvarez of Black Oak, Charles Richesin of Woodbridge and Bob Thomason of Brookside, and Merced's Ben Sanchez and Ted Dietz. All four teams tied after regulation produced respective 66 and 70s in the first two rounds. Alvarez and Washburn placed second place alone with a par on the third playoff hole.
