BURNHAM ON SEA, Somerset, England (Aug. 10, 2011) -- Kenny Subregis leads the qualifiers at the end of the stroke play stage of the 85th Boys Amateur Championship, staged at Burnham & Berrow and Enmore Park Golf Clubs in Somerset.
The 16-year-old French international will be the No. 1 seed for the match play stage which starts at Burnham & Berrow tomorrow (Thursday) after putting together rounds of 71 and 68 to finish on three-under-par 139 and with a three shot advantage over Callum Mackay from Burhill Golf Club in Surrey.
Mackay matched Subregis’ second round 68 to finish a single shot ahead of Bisbury’s Samuel Edwards while Richard Broadhurst from Italy, overnight leader Stefan Still from Germany, Guray Yuzici from Turkey, Jonathan Grey from Hever Castle, Italian Domenico Geminiani and Hallamshire Golf Club’s Matthew Fitzpatrick all shared fourth place on two-over-par 144.
One shot further back, English International Max Orrin, from North Foreland, carded a fine two-under-par 69 to haul himself up into a tie for tenth place alongside Paul Kinnear (Formby), Wiliam Whiteoak (Bingley St Ives), William Aldred (Brocket Hall), Patrick Kelly (Boston West) and Gianmaria Trinchero from Italy.
Last year’s runner-up, Maximilian Rottluff from Germany scored his second successive 73 to share 16th place with Callum Shinkwin (Moor Park) and Nathan Kimsey (Woodhall Spa), Robin Jonsson (Sweden), Gary Hurley (West Waterford), Cameron Shaw (Chevin), Hugh Campbell (West Essex), Jon Rahm (Spain), Ryan Pope (Exeter) and Keagan Cummings (Elm Park) on 146.
Subregis came into the Boys Amateur Championship in a rich vein of form, having reached the third round of The Amateur Championship at Hillside before claiming an impressive seven shot victory in the European Young Masters tournament in Hungary, and he maintained his momentum despite blustery conditions that made scoring extremely difficult for the 252-strong multi-national field.
The Frenchman opened his account with a 71 at Burnham & Berrow and was still level par after nine holes at Enmore Park before carding birdies on the 471-yard par-4 11th, the 320-yard par-4 17th and the 496-yard par-5 18th to leave the rest of the qualifiers trailing in his wake.
Mackay posted a 74 during yesterday’s opening round at Burnham & Berrow but got back to one-over-par with an eagle at Enmore Park’s 491-yard par-5 6th hole. He dropped a shot at the 385-yard par-4 8th and another at the 471-yard par-4 11th but then stormed home with three birdies over his closing three holes.
A total of 73 competitors from 13 countries made it through to the match play stage of the Championship. They include Oliver Carr, Matthew Fitzpatrick, Patrick Kelly, Nathan Kimsey, Paul Kinnear, Max Orrin, Callum Shinkwin and Toby Tree who were all members of the victorious English team at last week’s Boys Home internationals at Royal St David’s Golf Club in Harlech plus 65 other players from Scotland, Ireland, Wales, Spain, France, Germany, Austria, Turkey, Italy, Sweden, Belgium and Poland.
However, there were some notable casualties ahead of the match play stage that will identify the successor to Spain’s Adrian Otaegui, who defeated Rottluff by 4&3 in last year’s final at Kilmarnock Barassie.
Recent Carris Trophy winner, Harry Casey, from Enfield, was among the golfers who missed the cut which fell at nine-over-par 151. He added a 76 to his opening 79 to miss out by four shots.
The same fate befell Ewan Scott, from the St Andrews Club, who a couple of years ago became the first Scot to win the English Under-14 title. He played in the same group as Casey but finished on 158 after rounds of 81 and 77.
Scott’s fellow Scottish international, Joshua Jamieson, from the New Club, St Andrews, was also among those golfers who missed out on the match play stages. The reigning Scottish Boys Stroke Play champion began his tilt for the title with a ruinous 83 over Burnham & Berrow. He improved that score by ten shots at Enmore Park but still missed out by five shots.
However, it was not all doom and gloom for the Scottish entrants, particularly at one well-known club in the South West of the country. Incredibly, Dumfries & County will provide three of the 73 qualifiers for the match play stage after Greig Marchbank (73-76), Daniel McConnachie (71-78) and Liam Johnston (75-74) all finished on seven-over-par 149. Johnston, the last of the trio to complete his round, carded birdies on the last two holes to tie his team-mates.
The other Scottish qualifiers were Grant Forrest from Craigielaw (77-71-148), Bradley Neil from Blairgowrie (73-76-149) and Lawrence Allan from Alva (72-78-150).
