Phillips leads at the South Carolina Amateur Championship

BLUFFTON, SC (Aug. 4, 2011) -- After the first round of the SCGA Amateur Championship Evan Phillips of Lexington holds a one shot lead after turning in the low round of the day at six under par 66. Phillips started his round with four birdies on the front nine, followed by a two under par 34 on the back nine. Colleton River member Chandler Vilcheck held the clubhouse lead most of the day until the final group turned in their scorecards. Vilcheck also had four birdies on the opening nine, but had a lone bogey to bring him one stroke shy of the lead.

There is a gang of players at four under par 68 trying to chase down Phillips. Among those are Duke player Austin Cody (N. Charleston), former Newberry golfer Daniel Stanley (Inman), Jackson Moore (Isle of Palms) who is coming off an SCJGA victory at The Blade Junior Golf Classic three weeks ago and 2008 SC Amateur Champion Lee Palms (Greenville).

Defending Champion Drew Ernst fired an opening round 74, seven shots behind the leader

Play was suspended at 6:05 and did not resume until an hour later. The last group on the course left the scoring tent at 8:10.

The 2011 SCGA Amateur Championship is being conducted on the par 72 – 6,988 yard Dye Course at Colleton River Plantation in Bluffton, SC. The event began with a field of 140 players and will be cut to the low 70 and ties following the first two rounds of play. The Amateur Championship is one of 19 Major Championships run by the South Carolina Golf Association and is in its 80th year of existence.
