MISSION HILLS, KS (Aug. 2, 2011) – Harry Higgs and Jeffrey Lee all but guaranteed themselves a spot in Thursday’s first round of match-play after their 10-under par 60 at Mission Hills Country Club during the first round of stroke-play qualifying. The duo from Overland Park, KS and members of the SMU Mustang golf team rang off birdies at two, three, four, five, and nine of Mission Hills’s front side then added four more at holes twelve, thirteen, fourteen, and sixteen. A late stumble cost the team a stroke, but they would make up for it at the closing hole with an eagle three.
Higgs and Lee lead Shawn Barker of Bartlesville, OK and his partner A.J. Gebert of Wichita, KS by four strokes. A strong pack at 5-under par 65 awaits behind.
In the Masters Division (40yrs and up) Brian Schorgl of Leawood, KS and partner Jon Hiesberger of Kansas City, MO share the first round lead with Tom Leonard of Leawood, KS and his partner Ward Zerger of Olathe, KS. The teams each opened the competition with a 5-under par 65 to lead by two strokes over a three-way tie for third. 2010 Heart of America Masters Division Champions Jeff Hanslick and John Noblit sit in a tie for 6th at 2-under par 68.
2010 Heart of America Senior Division Champions Whit Holcomb and Les Smith sit in prime position to defend their title as they stand only one stroke behind first round leaders Fred Emich of Edwards, CO and partner Mike Shteamer of Prairie Village, KS as well as fellow Prairie Village, KS native Jim Archer and his partner Jigger James of Overland Park, KS. The two teams opened with 5-under par 65s to lead the day and look to a solid second round score to lock up a high seed heading into Thursday’s match-play.
