Texas Mid-Am Match Play: Sanchez, Wilkinson medalists
HORSESHOE, Tex. (July 21, 2011) -- Breezy but hot conditions welcomed the players during the stroke play qualifying round of the 2011 Mid-Amateur Match Play Championship presented by Liberty Mutual which is being held at Escondido. The Fazio designed course was in spectacular condition and welcomed the players with a true test of golf. At the completion of the day, thirty-two players found themselves advancing to tomorrow’s round of 32.
Ed Sanchez and Trey Wilkinson found themselves atop the leaderboard after both posting rounds of two-under par, 69. Sanchez (San Antonio) caught fire right out of the gate making birdies on three of his first four holes, before settling into his round. After bogeys on the fifth and thirteenth holes, Sanchez answered back with one final birdie on the fifteenth hole giving him a total of two under par.
Wilkinson (Houston) started much the same way as his co-medalist. Wilkinson opened up his round by birdieing three out of his first four holes. Even with a triple bogey on his eighth hole, Wilkinson turned in two under par. After a lone bogey and single birdie on the back, Wilkinson found himself also posting a round of 69.
Manny Bhakta (Burnet) is the only other player who found red numbers during the opening stroke play round. Bhakta finds himself the number 3-seed heading into tomorrow’s match play round of 32, after posting a one under par, 70. At the end of the day exactly 32 players posted rounds of 74 or better to advance. Tomorrow’s round of 32 is set to begin at 7:30AM with the round of 16 set for 1:00PM.
