Irwin, Most Top Seeds Win in CGA Match Play

DENVER, COL. (July 12, 2011) — Eight of the top 10 seeds, including No. 1 Steve Irwin of Lakewood Country Club, won their first-round matches Tuesday in the 111th CGA Match Play Championship at Bear Creek Golf Club in west Denver.

Irwin, the 2004 Match Play champion who competed in the U.S. Open last month, defeated Jack Cummings of Omni Interlocken Golf Club 7 and 6 in the round of 64. University of Colorado golfer Derek Fribbs also advanced easily, 4 and 3 over David Harris of Eagle Vail Golf Club.

However, the third and seventh seeds were ousted Tuesday. Spencer Sheets of Glenmoor Country Club, who played in the 2010 U.S. Junior Amateur, defeated No. 3 Jim Doidge of Pueblo Country Club 2 and 1. And Gus Lundquist of The Club at Pradera beat No. 7 Andy Moore of the Olde Course at Loveland 4 and 3.

Two rounds of matches will be played both Wednesday and Thursday to set up Friday’s 36-hole final.

ABOUT THE Colorado Match Play

18 holes of stroke play qualifying; the top 64 players will be seeded according to the stroke play results. Non- exempt players must pre-qualify. Must be an active member of the Colorado Golf Association.
