VERO BEACH, Fla. (July 7, 2011) -- Joey Petronio and Jimmy Stanger share the lead at four-under par in the 57th Florida State Boys Junior Championship as Sam Horsfield extended his lead to eight in the 13-15 age division heading into the final round at Quail Valley Golf Club and Bent Pine Golf Club in Vero Beach.
In the 16-18 age division, Joey Petronio, of Orlando, and the 2010 (13-15) Champion, Jimmy Stanger, of Tampa, are tied for the lead at four-under par 140. Petronio, a three time FJT Champion, fired a one-under par 71 at Quail Valley Golf Club in the second round. In the first round Petronio finished with five birdies and two bogeys for his round of three-under par 69. Stanger continued his solid play with a second round two-under par 70 to go along with his first round two-under par 70 at Bent Pine Golf Club. Petronio and Stanger lead the field by two strokes heading into the final round of play. Will Davenport, of Palm City, and Hunter O’Mahony, of Tequesta, are tied for third place with a two round total of two-under par 142. The Defending Champion Hank Lebioda, of Winter Springs, shot up the leader board with a second round three-under par 69, and is currently tied for 8th place. Fifty-three juniors in the 16-18 age division with a two-round total of 153 and better have advanced to the final round.
In the 13-15 age division, Sam Horsfield, of Davenport, recorded a second round six-under par 66 at Bent Pine Golf Club to increase his lead to eight strokes. Horsfield continued where he left off after round one, carding an impressive five-under par 31 on his front nine, and finished with a one-under par 35 on his back nine for his round of 66. Horsfield’s first round of seven-under par 65 included nine birdies, with six in a row from holes 9 through 14, and just two bogeys at Quail Valley Golf Club. Jorge Garcia, of Miami, stands alone in second place after a two round total of five-under par 139. Sean Smothers, of Pompano Beach, and Jin Zhang, of Bradenton, are currently tied for third place after posting a two round total of four-under par 140. Twenty-four juniors in the 13-15 age division advanced to the final day shooting a two-round total of 152 and better.
Before reaching the Championship, more than 360 participants attempted to qualify at one of 6 sites across the state. In the Championship, participants will play eighteen holes each at Quail Valley Golf Club and Bent Pine Golf Club on Wednesday, July 6th and Thursday, July 7th. After thirty-six holes, the field will be cut to the low 40% of each field plus ties. The final eighteen holes will be played at Quail Valley Golf Club.
Spectators and media are welcome to watch the state’s best junior golfers compete at Quail Valley Golf Club and Bent Pine Golf Club.
