Nebraska Match Play: Stanek stands alone
Kevin Stanek
2011 Nebraska Match Play Champion
GOTHENBERG, NE (June 25, 2011) -- Kevin Stanek of Bellevue won his first state title Saturday in electrifying fashion at Wild Horse Golf Club. The Creighton University golfer jumped to a 7 up lead after 18-holes eventually defeating Wesley Bernt of Kearney 8 and 7 in the 36-hole final of the 44th Nebraska Match Play Championship.
Stanek never trailed making birdies on the first two holes to claim a quick 2 up advantage. He then won hole 7 with another birdie to stretch the lead to 3 before blowing the match open winning four consecutive holes (10-13). Included in the four hole stretch was an ace on the par 3 11th and birdies on holes 10 and 12.
In the afternoon session, Stanek won the opening hole before Bernt came back to win holes 20, 21 and 23 trimming the deficit to 5. Stanek gradually regained command winning the 25th, 27th and 29th holes closing out Bernt on the hole where he made his morning ace (#11), this time with birdie.
