MOBILE, AL (June 22, 2011) -- The day started with 16 ladies in the championship flight of the 79th Women’s State Amateur Championship at Heron Lakes Country Club in Mobile and ended with just four after the completion of the match play rounds of 16 and the quarterfinals.

Thursday morning eight-time and reigning State Amateur champion Kathy Hartwiger of Birmingham will face Alison Hovatter of Meridianville, and hometown favorite and high school student Gabi Oubre will face Suzanne Stanley of Decatur.

Hartwiger beat Ellen Chun in the first round and Susan West of Tuscaloosa in the second round. West, who shot 71 in Tuesday’s stroke play seeding round, was medallist.

“It was a good match,” Hartwiger said. “I had a few blips on the front nine and she had some on the back nine.”

“The heat bothered me a little and I wasn’t as sharp as I would have liked to have been.”Hovatter, who will be an incoming freshman at Ole Miss this fall, got past Cynthia L. Navis of Point Clear in her afternoon match by a score of 4 & 3.

Oubre, who qualified last week for the U.S. Junior Girls Amateur by shooting 75 at Shoal Creek, beat reigning State Stroke Play champion and former University of Mobile golfer Maegan Rice of Florence in the quarterfinals.

Stanley, who just concluded her college career at Mississippi State, beat Ashleigh Whisenant of Attalla in their quarterfinal 4 & 2.

The semifinals will tee off Thursday morning and the 18-hole final will be Friday morning.
