Stoddard Trophy: Long Island Wins by One Point

RIVERHEAD, NY (June 21, 2011) -- The team fielded by the Long Island Golf Association won the 2011 Stoddard Trophy competition on Monday, June 20th, at Friar’s Head in Baiting Hollow, over teams fielded by the Westchester Golf Association and the New Jersey State Golf Association. The score was 19.5 points for Long Island, 18.5 points for Westchester and 16 points for New Jersey. 

The Stoddard Trophy competition is a one day triangular match, Ryder Cup style, featuring 6 alternate shot matches in the morning and 12 singles matches in the afternoon. The competition began in 1922, and has featured many luminaries of met area amateur golf, including those who went on to major careers as professionals. Notables from all walks of life have played in the matches, including Babe Ruth in 1939. The associations take turns providing the venue for the matches. The 2012 matches will be hosted by New Jersey.
