Titleist golf ball players sweep for 2nd straight week

FAIRHAVEN, Mass. (June 20, 2011) -- Titleist Brand Ambassdor and U.S. Open champion Rory McIlroy wasn't the only player to run away with a big trophy Sunday.

Pro V1 loyalist Matthew Zions (pictured above) won the European Tour's Saint-Omer Open by seven shots, contributing to a perfect 4-for-4 Sunday sweep for Titleist golf ball players across the worldwide professional tours.Last week, Titleist golf ball players won all seven events contested around the globe.

Seventy-seven players have now trusted Titleist golf balls to worldwide victories in 2011, seven times the nearest competitor and more than all competitors combined.

A total of 9,384 players have teed up Titleist golf balls in competition this season, more than six times the nearest competitor with 1,452 and more than all other golf balls combined.

EUROPEAN TOUR: Pro V1 loyalist Matthew Zions closed with a 2-under 69 at the Saint-Omer Open to earn his first European Tour title.

Zions finished the four rounds at Aa Saint Omer Golf Club at 8-under 276 (68-72-67-69), seven shots ahead of three players including Titleist Pro V1x loyalists Peter Gustafsson and Craig Lee.

Titleist was the overwhelming golf ball of choice at the event with 117 players, more than six times the nearest competitor with 18. Titleist also was first in iron sets (49); and sand, lob and approach wedges (194).

“It feels like I’m dreaming," said Zions. "The last four holes I was wondering when I could start thinking about winning, and when would be too soon that it tempted fate. I had a lump in my throat a couple of times. ... It was nice to feel those butterflies this morning and feel the adrenaline as I was coming down the stretch. That’s why we play."

Zions led the field in greens in regulation (76.4 percent) and averaged 1.79 putts per green in regulation.

• NATIONWIDE TOUR: Pro V1x loyalist Mathew Goggin became the first two-time winner on the Nationwide Tour this season, holding off Titleist Brand Ambassador Kyle Thompson for a one-shot victory at the Preferred Health Systems Wichita Open in Kansas.

Goggin rolled his Pro V1x golf ball in from 7 feet for birdie on No. 18 at at Crestview Country Club to post a final-round 2-under 69 and 18-under 266 total.

Thompson, winner of last week's Rex Hospital Open, also birdied two of his last three holes to shot a Sunday 69. He finished at 17-under 267.

"Since I have two kids, it really is special to win on Father's Day, but really any day is good to win a golf tournament," said Goggin," also a winner at the season-opening Panama CLARO Championship.


Goggin was one of 114 players in the field that trusted a Titleist golf ball, more than eight times the nearest competitor with 14 and more than all competitors combined.Titleist also was first in iron sets (44); sand, lob and approach wedges (139); and putters (68).

• ASIAN TOUR: Pro V1x loyalist Chawalit Plaphol captured the Queen's Cup for his first title in five years, closing with a 3-under 68 for an 11-under 273 total and two-shot victory.

It was Plaphol's third-career Asian Tour victory.

Eleven of the 13 players who finished among the top 10 and ties at Santiburi Samui Country Club relied upon Titleist golf balls, including six of the top seven. 

Titleist was the overwhelming choice of more players with 98, which is over 68 percent of the field.
